Machakos University College has collaborated with the Youth Initiative Development Network (YIDN) to provide free education to needy youth.
Speaking on Thursday in Machakos, the college principal Professor Francis Mathooko, said the project will target needy youth who are illiterate.
"The Youth Initiative Development Network (YIDEN) requested us to partner with them in empowering young people who have not had the chance to complete school,” said Mathooko.
The professor said as a university, they would provide education and training in welding, customer care and carpentry, among other courses.
“As a university we have a lot of talent and experience, and we can offer the needy youth training in courses such as carpentry and welding. We are putting in place course programmes that will run for two weeks, in a bid to equip the youth with these skills,” said Mathooko.
Daniel Mutua, YIDEN spokesman, thanked the college management for supporting the idea.
“We are grateful as we have also in the past received several tenders from this university. We will appreciate our groups being given special consideration of receiving training in courses like dress making and carpentry, to enable them start their own businesses,” said Mutua.
