Villagers in Mukunike village have protested against sand harvesting in the area saying the exercise threatens to expose graves.

They said due to the ongoing rains, the graves could be exposed to destruction.

"The sand harvesters mostly do it at night and they have dug up a cemetery exposing it to erosion by rainy waters," area chief Bethwel King'ele told this reporter on Tuesday.

"We are calling upon National Environment Movement Authority to restrict such careless sand harvest which is a destruction to the environment."

King'ele also said Kangundo OCPD Jane Kuria and OCS Morris Okul should also intervene and stop the unlicensed sand harvesting.

He said many youth had abandoned school and joined the business.

He also added that the the heavy sand lorries had destroyed the area roads, causing heavy transport problems especially during this rainy season when the roads are muddy.
