Nominated Senator Martha Wangari has lashed out at Cord leader Raila Odinga for turning down an invitation by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich in order to have him explain the Eurobond saga.
Speaking during a funds drive at Muthaiti Mixed Secondary School in Elementaita on Friday, Wangari termed the opposition leader a 'hypocrite' who was out to bring confusion in the Jubilee government by falsely framing cabinet secretaries.
“They (Cord) have made Waiguru step down, yet she was not corrupt, and now they want to send Rotich out,” she said.
“Odinga wanted clarification on the Eurobond money and Rotich welcomed him to his office. He later said he can't go to Rotich’s office because he was being disrespected. That means he is just politicking," she said.
While appreciating the oversight role played by the opposition, Wangari said that it was important for Cord members to criticise the government based on facts rather than ill will.
She also challenged Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula to come clean on the alleged British American Tobacco (BAT) saga.
An expose by the BBC investigative programme Panorama claimed that BAT which has its East African operations base in Nairobi bought the senator a return air ticket to London.
According to the expose, BAT lobbyist Julie Adelle-Owino in July 2012 requested the purchase of a business class plane ticket to London for Wetang’ula, then the country’s Minister for Trade.
It is claimed in e-mails seen by the BBC that Mr Wetang’ula was to be “hosted at Globe House” - BAT’s London headquarters.
The lobbyist emphasised that the transaction should be “paperless” and there should be “no receipts if any in his name”.
During the event, Wangari who is a member of the Senate Committee on Energy pledged to push for the installation of electricity in the school, which is yet to benefit from the on going school electrification programme conducted by the Rural Electrification Authority.
