Muhoroni Member of Parliament Onyango K'Oyoo has called on parliamentarians to convene an urgent sitting and approve funds to enable the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission provide more voter registration kits.
K'Oyoo said the one kit per ward provided for by the commission is insufficient to serve the big number of potential voters who are turning up for voter listing.
The MP who registered at Magare Primary School in his rural Wang’aya village said he had carried out a spot check in most of the areas within his constituency and the shortage of kits could be felt.
“Before I went to register at my station I moved in a number of polling stations and found people waiting for the arrival of the clerks to no avail. It is unfortunate that some had to walk several kilometres to find the kits,” said K'Oyoo.
He said Parliament need to convene an urgent meeting to review the process so as to allow for more kits. He said Muhoroni constituency targeted to register bout 15, 000 new voters.
“If we let this exercise to go on this way then we may have so many people missing out because of the distance. As parliamentarians we have to come out and save this situation,” he added.
A spot check in the constituency however, showed high voter turnout with most people expressing confidence that they would make it to register before the deadline date.
“In my constituency we have worked on a strategy of ‘brothers’ keeper’ where those who have already registered will be championing to bring more people to list as voters. I would like to urge people to come out now and not wait till the last day,” said K'Oyoo.
