The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), raised an alarm over the increased number of accidents in Nairobi caused by drivers who drive while drunk.

According to the report compiled by the NTSA, 70% of accidents are caused by drunk drivers. It is also said that these cases cause up to 30% of deaths in the capital city. The report said that many drivers love drinking on Fridays and during the weekend. It is believed that 52% out of the 70% accidents in Nairobi happen between Friday and Monday.

Most of the drivers, however, know that it is against the law for one to drive while drunk but still do it anyway.

Kibera matatu operators shared their views on this trending incident.

''Most of these drunken driving cases are caused by people who drive personal cars. Most of them will want to enjoy their weekend from Friday, so they go drinking a lot to an extent that they cannot drive back home safely,'' said Jairus Ndung’u, one of the matatu drivers.

''We don’t operate past 11 pm, yet most of the accidents are said to happen between 1.00 am -4.00 am. You can easily judge who is behind the accidents,'' said Kamau wa Njoroge, another driver.

Although the Alcoblow challenge is still in existence, Kibera matatu operators say most of the drivers will try evading the test by using some interior improvised routes.
