While walking around in Nakuru estates, there is one common thing you will likely to see, the donkey.
Donkeys are not only a common subject within Nakuru County but also very valuable.
But have you ever asked yourself why the animal is common and valuable in Nakuru?
According to Peter Ngugi, a resident of Subukia, donkeys became common in Nakuru during the early pre-independence days because they were the main mode of transport.
"During the pre-independence days, Nakuru was mainly inhabited by farmers and they needed to transport their produce to the market. They could only do so using donkeys and that is how the animal became so popular and valuable in Nakuru,"said Ngugi.
"All areas of Nakuru from Subukia to Molo were farming areas, and farmers relied so much on donkeys to move their goods to Nakuru town which was the main trading centre,"he said.
Ngugi added that there was a time when each homestead within Nakuru county could afford to miss a donkey.
He said that since that time donkeys have remained a major transport mode within the county as many people use them to ferry goods, fetch water and firewood and even when moving house.
