When I was in college in Nairobi, I always dreamt of working within the capital city and make more money.
Someone along the way informed me of a job vacancy in Nakuru town. I reluctantly took up the offer knowing very well that I will be in that place for a short time, I even started creating funny ideas on how I would request for an immediate transfer to Nairobi.
When I arrived to Nakuru for the first day, I kept on asking, "What good, can come from Nakuru?’’
Fast-forward; this is now my sixth year in Nakuru and any rumours of someone trying to transfer or move me to another place will be faced by a rebellion similar to the slave one.
Comparing Nakuru with Nairobi, someone might choose the latter, but little do they know they are leaving the land of opportunity behind. Until now, it’s like I am always dreaming when I pay less than Sh10,000 for my one bedroom house.
If I want to go to Nakuru town any time of the day or night, the motorcycle also known as boda boda which is the fastest means of transport here, charges Sh50 only, no off-peak or peak hours. The 14-seater matatus charges Sh30.
Now, having settled in an affordable good house and catered for transport to and from work, let’s talk about the way to a man’s heart; food! Yes, Rift-Valley is popularly known as the food basket of this country and to add the icing on the cake, Nakuru happens to be the headquarter of Rift Valley region.
Fresh vegetables, milk, fish meat are all easily available at a very affordable price.
What about entertainment joints. Well during the Saturday afternoon, we can start with Afraha stadium for a soccer match or Nakuru Athletic Sport Club for a rugby game.
If you are not a fan of the two, there is Nakuru Amateur Boxing Club. Then you can wind up the day in any of the popular joints so many such that we can’t list all of them here.
Lastly, in a month like January,there is no need to worry. Guys like us who spend all their coins in December hoping for a miracle in new year, and of which doesn’t happen, mama mboga or the shopkeeper next to your house comes in handy, they will lend you anything but come end month you will pay them with interest.
Indeed, I have no other description for the land of opportunity.
