In the past, parents and their children would head to church together every Sunday. Not anymore.

You'll agree with me that many young people are ignoring the Holy Sabbath day.

An interview with some students of Maseno University revealed some reasons why youths are dropping out of the church.

Cleophas Olage, a leader in one of the students' religious organisations, said the youths today are no longer scared by the 'hell' thing.

He added that many ignore the doctrine that one day everybody will give an account before the judgement seat of God.

Some young people have also quit going to church due to lack of honesty in the worship places.

They claim many conservative churches dismiss legitimate questions, opinions and doubts with pat, and often right answers.

Others claim that the church has become irrelevant.

They argue that church leaders are hypocritical and have demonstrated too much moral failure.

A large number of youths have also defied the holy day because of the self righteous Christians in the church.

They have been discouraged from going to church by the judgement of the 'perpetually self-righteous' Christians.

Another category of youth say they resolved to leave the church because of the prosperity-centered preaching and teachings.

They claim most of the time pastors use the word of God to preach and teach more on giving and prosperity.

Rather, they expect teachings based on the word of God which can address their relevant situations like living amid challenges.
