Ruiru Deputy County Commissioner Mercy Gatobu has blamed wines and spirits retailers for increased consumption of illicit second generation drinks among the residents.
Gatobu observed that many residents and more so the youth have embarked in consumption of unlicensed alcohol because they are readily available and cheap.
She also said that most of the wines and spirits shops open as early as 7am and close in the late night hours, a blatant violation of government directive on operation hours.
''Most of the operators are not licensed and neither do they meet the health standards and the Kenya Bureau of Standard requirements,'' lamented the administrator.
Gatobu has vowed to work with chiefs and police officers to ensure eradication of unlicensed alcohol, crime and drug abuse.
She was addressing residents of Ruiru Town on Monday.
