A 46-year-old woman was on Tuesday charged before a Kisumu court for stealing sugar and cooking oil from a supermarket in Kisumu.
Mary Mwangale denied the charges before Kisumu Principal Magistrate Thomas Obutu for the offence she allegedly committed on March at Kibuye Matt supermarket in Kisumu.
According to the prosecution documents, the accused entered the Kibuye Matt supermarket like any other customer.
However, upon leaving the premises, the guards noticed something unusual with her.
This forced them to conduct a search on her as she was walking uncomfortably.
The guards discovered that she had staffed the one kilogram of sugar in her bra, while the one litre of cooking oil had been stashed in the armpits covered with a heavy jacket she was wearing.
Mwangale however, told the court that she bought the goods.
"Your honour I bought this goods from the supermarket and paid for them with my own money, I wonder why I was arrested. I would request this court to acquit me," said Mwangale.
The prosecution said that the accused could not provide the receipts showing she had purchased the goods.
The prosecution said the accused should be detained for a week in order to review the CCTV footage as part of the investigation.
Mr Obutu declined to grant the request, but released the accused on a free bond until Monday when the case will resume.
