Politicians in Kisumu have condemned the manner in which nominated women MCAs are being discriminated against.

Kisumu nominated ward representative Farida Salim said discrimination against nominated leaders is very loud, questioning whether it is a crime being a nominated leader.

“Is it a crime to be a nominated woman leader? Senators are passing a supplementary budget of Sh300 million where each senator will get Sh7 million to monitor county governments. However, nominated senators are not catered for,” said Mrs Salim.

She said that since there was no elected woman Senator, the money will empower the men only to do oversight.

Nominated Senator Joy Gwendo who also comes from Kisumu East was, however, optimistic that things will change only if women go for elective positions.

“The only way things can change is if women come out and vie for leadership positions. We should not just sit back and wait for someone somewhere to create change,” said Gwendo.

She added that women shy away from vying or they don’t do it to win. With this top up method we are pushing for to ease the achievement of the two-thirds gender rule, women should jus keep vying.

“We can’t sit back because we lost. Our consistency is what will change our patriarchal society,” said Gwendo on social media.
