More than 200 women affiliated to different youth groups have a reason to celebrate this festive season after Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua's wife, Lucia donated foodstuff and utensils.

The women got the presents on Wednesday after the First Lady toured Menengai West ward in Rongai sub-county during her inter-ward cancer awareness and free screening campaign.

A majority of the women who attended the function at the Mangu Health Centre couldn’t hide their joy saying the governor’s wife had shown her commitment in advocating the rights of the marginalised in society.

“Her commitment to not only ensure but always oversee medical camps in different regions and has proved instrumental in encouraging many women to go for free cancer screening and live positively,” noted Belinda Wairimu, chairperson, Menengai women group.

She called on the community to support the First Lady in her initiatives saying in the long run, the results will be felt by everybody.

“The funny thing about the African mentality is that we never embrace anything regardless of its significance to our lives and only start rushing against time to beat the deadline. Let’s work with her to ensure a healthy society,” she advised.

Lucia, in collaboration with the county’s public health and sanitation department and the Kinuthia Mbugua Foundation is on an extensive cancer awareness campaign to encourage residents mostly women to go for free cancer screening.

The First Lady further revealed that the next group of beneficiaries will be from Kwa Rhonda, London and Kia Maina slums.
