Youth from various parts of Kiambu county has as asked the government to create free WiFi zones for youth to enable them access internet.

They have said that affordable internet access should be seen as a basic, necessary infrastructure for the public to access information.

Jared Opiyo, who graduated three years ago but has not secured a job, said lack of disposable income to purchase data bundles has locked out many youth from accessing internet.

"Many youths are in the low income bracket even being unable to meet basic needs but if provided with free internet, they can venture into economic activities such as e-commerce and other related activities that will provide them with incomes," said Opiyo in Juja town.

A blogger, Catherine Wambui who is a resident of Kahawa Wendani, said affordable access to internet will enable the youth access many services offered by both national and county governments and be able to participate in formulation of policies.

"Public participation is a constitution guarantee and easy access to information will empower many to participate in public affairs. They will also easily access government tenders and other services," said Wamuyu.

Erick Muriithi, a student of ICT in NIBS college, said it will be a great stride in education.

"Affordable internet access will reduce the cost of acquiring education through distance learning and easy access to information," argued Murithi.
