A youth group that has been engaging in poultry farming has won a prize from a local vernacular station following its efforts to educate youth on how to use farming to uplift living standards.

Bosamaro Youth Group has been helping in formation of new youth groups from the county and giving them tips to invest in farming.

Speaking on Sunday when he paid a courtesy call to the group, Royal Media’s Egesa FM presenter Erastus Moturi lauded the group’s contribution to farming and announced support from the radio station to help the group plan outreach events.

“I am happy to be part of this group because we as Royal Media family are impressed with some of the activities you have been doing," he said.

"Teaching other youth on how to start successful farming is really recommendable and on behalf of the radio station, I want to announce that the management has opted to work closely with the team to help reach more youth from our county."

Mr Moturi urged youth from Gusii region to emulate the group and warned of possible struggles if youth continued to depend on white-collar jobs.

“It is a myth that farming should be for those who are uneducated. I want to urge youth from Gusii region to invest in agro-economics because that is where we are heading to. We can make a living by emulating what this group is doing and I am glad that they have taught youth on how to go about it,” he added.

The group's chairman Fred Obare said: “We major in poultry farming but we also do some dairy and other farming like maize growing. We have set other businesses elsewhere and created job opportunities for other young people."
