Youths in Nakuru County have been urged to be go-getters and avoid engaging themselves in things that don’t add value to their lives and society.

Speaking at Kabarak University where he offered a public lecture to students and the public, Naushud Merali, chief executive cum founder of the Sameer Group of Companies said the country’s gross domestic product was stagnating because the youth don’t want to turn available opportunities into fortunes.

“Open up your minds and utilise any idea and innovation that you think can make an impact to the people around you. Don’t just seat there, do something less you become a burden to everybody,” the businessman advised.

According to Merali, a lot of young people were languishing in poverty because of living way much above their limits and lacking a plan that will ensure them achieve their life targets.

“In life, be realistic; remember that you are the pace setter of any achievement you wish to realise as a person, if you slow it down, it will take long to come by but if you act on it now, things will start rolling out as long as you have the right mentality and you associate yourself with like-minded persons,” he said.

He gave an example of the M-Pesa service which has been adopted worldwide but started in Kenya by university students saying a lot more of similar innovations can come by if young people realised their worth and took risks.

“You are the brain, everything you want to see is within you, don’t wait for the government to intervene, let the government come to you for your input to ease and improve on service delivery,” Merali added.

He envisioned a stable economy with a double GDP by 2020 if young people stood up and realised their worth as far as innovation and entrepreneurship was concerned.
