Hundreds of youths from Madongo area on Saturday blocked the busy Garissa-Nairobi highway in a protest against delays in issuance of national identity cards.

The youths expressed their dissatisfaction for the slow pace and unnecessary frustrations subjected to them by the registration officers.

The over five hundred youths chanting slogans waved placards and banners at the same time paralysing road transport for close to three hours.

Maulid Mohamed, a local resident who was among the protesters, lamented that he had been waiting for the identification document for the past two years with no trace of ever getting one.

“I applied for an Identification card way back in 2014. I was issued with a waiting card and assured that I would get my ID within three months from the date of application. Now, the registration officials are taking me in circles whenever I inquire for my ID,” he said.

Mohamed stated that the lack of an ID has left him and other youths in the area stranded since they can neither travel nor open bank accounts or even enrol for further studies.
