Nyamira County CeC for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Ms Peris Oroko has asked farmers in the area to diversify their agricultural activities to increase their income.

She called on farmers to start growing crops that her office has recommended that can do well in the region such as sweet potatoes, cassava, millet and sorghum and stop relying specifically on tea as the only cash crop in the area.

She was speaking on Tuesday morning when she visited a farming group in Bondeni that has already adopted to the culture of planting other crops.

The CS said the land is fertile and with the favourable climate in the region they will get more income all the year long.

“All farmers in this area should venture into various crop enterprises which will not only ensure food security but also provide alternative sources of income all year round,” said Peris.

She said the county government is ready to help the farmers in carrying out any research that will land them to their destiny and increase their farm produce.

Farmers in the area were urged to join saccos so that they can be able to receive loans for their personal growth and farm produce growth.
