Kiambu county commissioner Esther Maina has defended her administration against claims of laxity in taming illicit brew.

Speaking in her office on Tuesday, Maina said her officers have been on the forefront in fighting illegal brews.

She dismissed reports that her administration has been reluctant to fight brews saying that much has been achieved in curtailing illicit brewing.

Maina blamed a cartel which she said was behind the illicit brew menace in some parts of the county.

“It is false and unfounded for some people to blame my administration for the rise in illicit brewing in Kiambu,” she said.

The county commissioner said her officer has often been on the ground hunting down and dealing with brewers.

She also defended her officers against claims of colluding with brewers.

She said her office has interdicted six chiefs in the past two months for colluding with brewers.

Maina said that the fight against brewing needs the support of every Kiambu citizen.

“We too are concerned by the rising cases of brewing and have taken necessary measures to tame them,” she said.

Maina however blamed agencies mandated to fight alcohol abuse accusing them of not being committed.

“On our end we have done everything necessary to stop drug and alcohol abuse but other agencies must supplement our efforts,” she said.

The County Commissioner said the police alone will not be able to tame illicit brewers. She called for support of local leaders and the public to help deal with the menace.

Maina at the same time said she had received reports stating some prominent people could be behind illicit brewing in the area and investigations were under way.
