Maseno Bodaboda Association Chairman George Ogolla has urged operators from the area to join self-help groups as a way boosting their income.
Speaking to this writer on Sunday, Ogolla said that the earnings from bodaboda work is not enough to facilitate quicker developments.
“With self-groups, one can get a loan to carry out activities such as buying land, constructing and also establish a business. If you depend on earnings from bodaboda, yes you can achieve all this but it will take you a long period of time. To my colleague’s self-help groups are the way to go,” said Ogolla.
Ogolla added that majority of formal banking sectors still segregate people with such nature of work due to their unstable income.
“Even if banks help us, their interest rates are high, which most of us cannot afford, therefore the idea of going to banks is uncalled for,” said Ogolla.
The chairman added that with self-help groups, members can get moral support during their time of need, something that is not easily available in the formal banking sector.
“What I would like to urge my fellow bodaboda operators is that self-help groups have worked for many and they are still working, therefore look for one near you and register in order to reap the full benefits,” added Ogolla.
