More than 20 cows died on Thursday morning after they were hit by lightning in Peno area, Uasin Gishu County.
The 28 cows had been confiscated by Kaptagat Forest officers for grazing in the forest against the forest law.
Speaking to our reporter, assistant officer in charge of the forest Steve Chesa said they confiscated the cows since it is illegal to graze in the forest area.
"We confiscated the animals to wait for their owners to come for them so that we can arrest them and take them to court for grazing the animals in the forest without permission," said Chesa.
"After one hour it started raining heavily and there was lightning and thunderstorms. Twenty cows were hit and died on the spot, but eight survived", he adds.
Chesa warned residents against grazing in the forest, saying that according to the Forest Act, it is illegal to leave animals grazing in the forest unattended.
"The cows were alone in a young indigenous plantation planted last year, and they were about to start destroying the plants,” added Chesa.
