More than 300 girls in South Mugirango constituency on Tuesday benefited from free sanitary towels donated by the Lions Club International, Kisii chapter.

At least 15 elderly people living with disabilities were also given free aids, including ten wheelchairs by the club.

The chapter's president, also Kisii County executive member for health, Ms Sarah Omache, said the club will focus more in aiding the less fortunate in society.

She said the towels would help prolong the girls’ stay in school for more than a year.

Several county officials including the governor, Mr James Ongwae, attended the function in Tabaka Township yesterday.

The county governor’s wife, Ms Elizabeth Ongwae, said there still exists deeply ingrained inequalities that disadvantage the girl child in society.

She said effort done to achieve the Millennium Development Goals must factor in the girl child.

“Effective support for the girl child in today’s society is indicative that we are on the right track to achieving the millennium development goals, she said

The club members, under Ms Omache, said they would roll more out more programmes to help the less fortunate in the area.

Mr Ongwae promised to increase the provision of sanitary towels to the schools in the sub-county.

The members also commissioned a water project in the Tabaka town which they had funded.

The governor echoed his government’s effort to uplift education standards in the county.

He said the current budget has increased the ward education bursary from Sh3 million to Sh5 million to benefit more students.

He also said HIV/Aids infection is on the rise and urged residents to go for testing to know their status.
