Six men and two women who were caught drunk on Wednesday morning will spend a week in jail for drinking at the wrong time.
The eight John Kimotho 23, John Mumu 23, Benard Murigi 27, Moris Wagio 24, Kelvin Ndung'u 26, Stephen Muiruri 31, Agnes Ngonyo 28, and Benedetta Wambui 29, all from Thika, were arraigned in the main Thika Court accused of drinking in wrong hours.
During the ruling, Chief Magistrate Stephen Mbungi called on the chiefs and the police officers to work together to halt alcohol existence in our society citing it as number one source of domestic violence.
The eight who were arrested by police officers in collaboration with county askaris who were on patrol in Thika Town on Wednesday morning. The accused person allegedly caused disturbance in the town from their rowdy behaviour that caught the attention of many passers-by.
Prosecutor Nancy Muthuri requested the court to have the eight jailed for a month, as a lesson to drunkards but Justice Mbungi opted to use the constitution in making his ruling.
He however cited that the Alcohol Act can be amended to create tough penalties to all who go against the stipulated alcohol rules.
The eight were denied fine options which they requested after pleading innocent. The judge noted that the fine option will not hinder them from taking more alcohol.
