The county assembly of Kisumu is set to debate on a motion proposing the formation of county water board for proper management water resources.
A report about Water, Energy and Sanitation tabled on Wednesday afternoon by South West Nyakach MCA Benjamin Onyango, recommends the need for better management of water supply in the county.
Onyango said that the county needs to emulate the national government which has the Water Services Regulatory Board (Wasreb) in the management of water resources.
He added that the county has not put in place the requisite policy paper that can tackle the water sector.
“During the committee meetings with various water stakeholders, we realised that there is loss of water, high cost of electricity to drive the water system and illegal water connections,” he said.
Ahero Ward representative, Maurice Aloo said that in his ward there is a lot of water going to waste that needs to be channeled to farming to increase food security.
Awasi-Ojiko MCA, Fanuel Aim proposed that the county government should promptly allocate funds to set up water tanks in the ECDE institutions in the county.
“The county government should provide 5000-litre water tanks in ECDE centres. That way children will have access to clean water,” said Aim.
