Athi River Township ward member of county assembly, Michael Mutua, has called on motorists plying the busy Mombasa highway to adhere to traffic rules to avoid accidents.
Addressing journalists at an accident scene in Lukenya, Mutua said that a number of drivers especially those operating heavy commercial vehicles were violating the laws hence causing unnecessary accidents.
"I take this humble opportunity to call on those motorists who still flout traffic rules to refrain from doing so in order to avoid unnecessary road accidents," said Mutua.
Mutua said the road had a lot of black spots though the number of accidents had gone down over the last three months due to improved discipline among majority of the motorists.
He said a good number of the drivers plying the route were well conversant with the road which normally experiences heavy traffic due to the high number of tracks, lorries and trailers transporting cargo from the port of Mombasa.
The legislature however claimed that most of the drivers who operate the heavy commercial vehicles use hard drugs thereby end up losing focus at times thus causing accidents.
“Two people, a driver and his turn boy died instantly early this morning when their trailer ferrying petrol lost control and rammed into a ditch," said Mutua.
He called on the traffic police in the region to be tough on motorists who fail to adhere to traffic laws.
He said such motorists should be arrested and handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution in a bid to fighting lawlessness among them.
