Speaking from his office on Friday, Athi River Administration Police Commandant Stephen Matu said there were increased numbers of youth trading in the illicit drug in the region.

"This illicit drug and substance business has attracted great number of the residents especially youth from Athi River and its environs. It must stop with immediate effect," said Matu.

Matu said his office had gathered enough intelligence on the youth who conduct the trade in the area and how they do it without getting noticed.

He said security agents were already vigilant to ensure that the supplies of the drugs were cut down, those on transit seized and culprits brought to book.

This warning comes barely a month since administration police officers with help of chiefs from the town seized a 50 kilogram consignment valued at Sh500,000 that was being delivered at whole sale to drug peddlers in the region.

Athi River resident Joshua Ochieng', said that a number of youth from Athi River town were getting attracted to bhang trade instead of engaging in legal sources of earning decent livelihoods.

Ochieng' revealed that culprits had changed the strategy with female youth peddling the drug in large supplies as male ones supply it to end users at retail.

Matu said security forces from the sub county were jointly committed to curbing those involved in the trade arguing that they would not allow illegal businesses to thrive in the region.
