Four suspects were yesterday charged at a Nakuru court with possession of rolls of bhang and two brands of illicit brew estimated at Sh1.5 million.

Aloice Otieno, Rose Awiti, Wickliffe Chesichery, and Jared Njoroge denied the charges when they appeared before chief magistrate Samuel Mungai and were released on Sh400,000 bond each with sureties of similar amounts.

The magistrate scheduled the mentioning of their case on August 6.

The suspects faced charges that on July 30 2014, along Nakuru-Nairobi highway, they were found trafficking 120 bundles of bhang worth Sh500,000 and two brands of alcoholic drinks, all estimated at a street value of Sh1.5 million.

The court was also told that the arresting officers became suspicious when the driver of a vehicle the suspects were travelling in tried to ignore an order to stop at a checkpoint.

After discovering contrabands in the bus, the officers directed the driver to drive the bus up to Nakuru Central police station where passengers were held for about an hour, the court heard.
