Nakuru County is now the first county in Kenya to have Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant. This also makes Kenya the first country in Africa to have such a plant
The plant which is located inside The Gorge Farm Energy Park in Naivasha was officially opened by Nakuru County Governor, Kinuthia Mbugua. The bio gas power plant will produce 2.2 MW of power which will be distributed in several areas of Nakuru County and its environs,
According to the Governor, the plant which is accredited to Tropical Power Energy Group is expected to solve energy problems in the county by producing cost effective energy and boosting county’s energy security. It will also help in waste management since it will uses local wastes.
"Distributed power projects are vital to our energy security, reliability and efficiency and the park will be using local crop waste and the sun to generate clean, renewable power close to the point of use” he said
Apart from energy production, the project will also be used for research by scientists from the Oxford university with the aim of advancing the technology.
Kinuthia has also maintained that he is willing to continue working with Tropical Power, Kenya Power and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum to ensure that the county gets more such projects.
