The Anglican Church Eldoret Diocese Bishop Christopher Ruto has asked the government to leave the role of formalising marriages to the church.

Ruto says the move will cut down the cost of marriages as well as laying a Christian foundation in the important institution.

The clergyman added that the cost of marriage started going up when the government allowed everyone that is not the church to formalise marriages.

"There has been an emergence of businessmen who ask for huge amounts of money to formalise marriages. We have so many Christian MPs in Parliament and I wonder how they allow some bills that undermine the marriage institution to go through parliament," said Ruto.

The Bishop warned that the marriage institution might soon be a pale shadow of the past if the government allows all and sundry to formalise marriages.

"Marriage is under threat if the current phenomenon continues", he said.
