Newly admitted first-year students at Maseno University are accusing the university's bodaboda operators of taking advantage of them by hiking fares.
According to students who expressed their concerns on Tuesday morning, they do not understand why they have to pay more compared to other continuing students.
The bodabodas plying between College and Siriba campuses usually charge Sh20 and Sh30. However, this has not been the case for the first year students are required to pay Sh20 extra.
“At first we thought these were the normal prices because we are new here. We have learned that is not the case,” said Purity Chemos, a first-year student. The students have condemned the operators for taking advantage of them yet they do not have any source of income.
“They should stop taking advantage because we are new. With time, a majority of us will not be using their services in case they don’t stop,” said Faith Akoth.
According to the continuing students, the prices are similar compared to other semesters and they are not surprised by the charges imposed on the first year students because they also underwent a similar ordeal. The bodaboda association secretary-general Paul Owoba refused to comment on the matter saying the matter had not been brought to his attention.
