The body of a three-week-old baby was found dumped in a pit latrine in Yoomokani village, Machakos County.
Confirming the incident on Monday, area chief Onesmus Nzile said the body was discovered by residents in the area.
“Today's incident where a small child was tied on a rope by the mother and dumped in a pit latrine is unfortunate and inhuman," said Nzile.
The chief further stated that the baby's mother had given birth prematurely at Machakos Level Five Hospital, before being discharged three days ago.
The body of the infant was retrieved by area community officers with the help of the chief and his assistant.
Police are still searching for the child's mother who has since gone into hiding.
The body of the infant was taken to Matuu Mortuary.
