Bogiakumu ward representative Richard Bundi has raised concern over the rampant cases of people being attacked by stray dogs in the area, and called for a mandatory registration of the animals to tame the menace.

During an interview in his office in Kisii, Bundi said the registration will ensure dog owners take full liability for any injuries or deaths resulting from dog bites, which are a leading cause of rabies.

The MCA also wants those interested in keeping dogs to be licensed, and a proper record maintained so that they can be easily identified and pursued to compensate victims.

“Proper policies and mechanisms should be put in place to make sure all dog owners obtain relevant licenses to keep the animals,” the MCA said.

He further noted that cases of stray dogs terrorizing people were on the rise in the county, citing the latest incident in which a woman died last month after she was attacked by a dog.

He also demanded that all health facilities be stocked with anti-rabies drugs to treat victims of dog bites.

Bundi added that he will be raising a motion in the county assembly that will see the untamed dog owners face the law if they fail to register their dogs.
