Several needy students joining public universities in September from Borabu Constituency are set to benefit from an education kitty started by residents.
A grand funds drive was conducted by area residents on Sunday to support more than 50 needy students who will be joining various institutions of higher learning after getting admission letters from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
Led by Borabu politician, Dr Kambi Nyandoro, the residents said that it was a way of encouraging children from the region to work hard and help the community in future.
According to them, the same function will be held annually to support children from needy backgrounds joining institutions of higher learning.
“Education is mandatory in our society and all children belong to us. We are determined to ensure our children are supported so that they can help us in future. A fundraising will be held annually to support this course,” said Mr Peterson Omwanza.
Kambi challenged area residents to support the needy in the society besides advocating for the arrest of parents who fail to take their children to school.
“We are always ready to support the needy. It is our responsibility and we just want to see students working had. However, some parents are ignorant of education and the government should take a decisive action against them since education is free at lower levels,” he said.
Over Sh600,000 was contributed with the each student expected to get at least Sh15,000 to aid in paying college fees for the 2015-16 academic year.
