Residents of Mwongori village in Borabu constituency have urged the government to carry out an investigation over rising numbers of people believed to be outsiders in the region.
According to them, a number of people have thronged into the village and its surrounding, rising questions over the increased insecurity cases in the region.
Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting organised by local leadership to discuss the issue, residents led by aspiring Mekenene MCA Kaka Simon questioned the role of provincial administration in investigating the claims.
“We are not opposed to welcoming people from other parts of the country here but we want to be assured that they are genuine people ready to mingle with us. We have been tackling a serious of insecurity incidents in the recent past therefore, it will be in order if the government subjects them to a ‘vetting’ process to validate their being here,” Kaka said.
They said the process will be in compliance with Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta’s famous Nyumba Kumi initiative that aims at sensitising citizens to report people whom they suspect of being dangerous to the society.
“We have to live with harmony and the president said that we must know our neighbours. Since we do not know a number of them, we would like to urge the government to investigate tem and validate their being around,” he added.
They gave an ultimatum of one week to the government to investigate a number of outsiders in the village and the surrounding Chepilat town before giving a comprehensive report.
“They must take us seriously. One week is enough for the government to traverse the village and the neighbourhood to check whether the suspected individuals are citizens of this country and the reason they are in the area because most of them are always idle,” he said.
