Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has strongly condemned the move to halt the issuance of passports by the Eldoret immigration office saying that the move is meant to scuttle devolution. The issuance of passports in Eldoret, which was serving the whole of North Rift, was stopped due to corruption allegations. The deputy governor has demanded that the issuance be reverted to Eldoret immediately. “Two years go the department of immigration accepted to devolve the issuance of passports to Eldoret where people from the whole of North Rift could apply for passports which saved them the cost of traveling to Nairobi, that is how we want it”, said Chemno. “We are very disappointed that the new director of immigration has taken back what we had already been given. You cannot unwind a clock; a clock can only move in one direction”, he added. Chemno has denied allegations that there is corruption in the Eldoret offices. “If there is corruption at all in the issuance of passports here, then the director of immigration should blame it on his staff. He needs to vet his people; we don’t want people to be traveling from Eldoret to go for passports in Nairobi. It is against the spirit of devolution that requires that services be brought near the people”, the deputy governor said. He has now asked the director of immigration to punish the alleged corrupt staff members in the Eldoret office and spare the county residents from traveling to the capital for passports.
