Mombasa County government has issued a warning to bring down all buildings constructed along the drainage systems to allow for free flow of water.
This comes as heavy rains start pouring in the region as forecasted by the Kenya Meteorological Department.
While addressing journalists on Wednesday at Bamburi area, Francis Thoya, who is a committee member of the Mombasa Lands and Town Planning County Executive confirmed the move, saying it would allow free movement of water.
"If the structures along the drainage systems are not demolished, then there will be interference in the flow of water and this will definitely cause floods in the areas." said Thoya.
Thoya further advised residents residing in such buildings to leave immediately before the demolition process begins.
"We hereby urge all those residing in buildings located along the drainage systems to vacate and find other places to stay as we look to solve this looming problem," he added.
The order comes only a day after the County government ordered over 2,000 fishermen operating along the coastline to keep off from the ocean.
Thoya also confirmed that the county government had set a side Sh100 million as an emergency fund in case of any eventuality during the El Nino rains.
