Different ethnic groups resident in Burnt Forest on Saturday held a tournament whose objective was to foster a peaceful coexistence among communities living in the area.

Burnt Forest was one of the worst hit areas in the North Rift during the 2007/2008 post-election skirmishes.

The tournament christened as 'Sports for Peace' was organised by the area leaders and involved both men and women drawn from different communities living in the area.

“We want to raise awareness on the need for people to live as one and in peace. Sports can help reduce ethnic animosity and enhance unity among young and old people from all tribes,” said Isaac Terer, the Uasin Gishu county assembly speaker.

The leaders added that they have agreed on a long term solution to end ethnic violence that has become prevalent during general elections.

“Our agreement will focus on short term and long term issues. Peace and unity among our people is very pivotal in the agreement,” said Silas Kering, the area ward administrator.

Other leaders who attended the event include Uasin Gishu county CEC in charge of ICT, Barnabas Sang.
