A Burundian woman who sought refuge at the Kisumu Central police station is awaiting a court direction on her asylum status.
The woman who fled her country due to instability has been staying at the police station for close to three weeks.
She is with her three children and two others whose parents perished in the war that erupted following the disputed three term presidential term of Pierre Nkurunziza.
Kisumu County police commander, Nelson Njiri said the woman was given a lift by truck drivers from Busia to Kisumu.
Njiri said the woman was taken to court, charged with being in the country illegally but she narrated the pain she has undergone in her home country and wanted to settle in Kenya.
“When she arrived at the station seeking help, we had to take her to court first to be charged with being in the country illegally, she pleaded guilty and gave a narration of her ordeal” he said.
Speaking to the press at his office on Wednesday, Njiri said that officials from the refugee department were summoned to court and at the moment her case is yet to be determined.
He said she is scheduled to get back to court on Wednesday to see if her plea for asylum will be granted by the court.
Should her case be granted she will be taken to one of the refugee camps in the country.
