A businessman on Monday collapsed in Kisumu after police raided his store and impounded 3,000 cartons of illicit alcohol.

The second generation liquor worth more than Sh5 million was seized at a bungalow in Tom Mboya Estate.

More than 10 cartons of legal alcohol were also found in the house.

The 26 brands of illicit liquor were stashed in cartons and hidden in different rooms in the bungalow. The operation followed a tip-off from the public.

Two suspects were arrested at the premises during the crackdown by APs Quick Response Team (QRT) under the command of Augustine Kamaria. Officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs), health department, county government and Nema were also involved in the raid.

Kisumu OCPD Christopher Mshimba said that the businessman is suspected to be a prominent alcohol distributor in Western and Nyanza regions.

Mshimba said the man is admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital where he is under police watch.

He said the businessman, who has not been identified, will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

“The raid on illicit brews is on course and we will not relent to ensure we clear the town of the killer drinks,” Mshimba said.

He said the alcohol will be destroyed following the required process.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Keitany lauded APs QRT led by Karanja Muiruri, in the war on illicit liquor.

Keitany said 266 people have been arrested and taken to court since the start of the raid adding that last week on Friday, 645 litres of illicit alcohol seized from different parts of Kisumu town in the ongoing crackdown were destroyed.

The raid follows a similar one last Monday, when police nabbed illicit brews worth Sh5million in Nubian Estate.
