A city businessman has urged parents with candidates within slums in Nakuru to offer their children ample time to prepare well for the on-coming Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations.
Speaking at Kwa Rhonda slums on Sunday after donating mathematical sets, clip boards and other exam material to students, Victor Ochieng’ Cigar noted that he feels for students from informal settlements who are forced to go against all odds especially during national examinations periods where one feels all expectations are on them.
“Having been brought up in Mathare slums in Nairobi, I understand the situation in different slums so this is just an initiative to encourage these young Kenyans that no matter the backgrounds, anybody’s dreams are valid,” said Mr Ochieng’, who owns book shops and a sports facility shops in major towns across the county.
He said a lot has to be done when it comes to preparing candidates at the slum level because some fail to concentrate on revision because of the environment they live in.
Mr Ochieng’ called on caregivers, churches and other local leaders to always work with schools to ensure that such candidates get access to food throughout the exam period.
“It is a collective initiative because when results come out, all of rush to these schools to celebrate the best performers not withstanding what they had to go through before bringing pride to our schools,” he said.
