Businessmen from Mavoko Sub-County should always keep their fire extinguishers in good condition for efficiency in case of fire outbreaks.
This is according to the region's fire department supervisor, Duncan Kamatu, who said his office had noticed that some of the traders had fire extinguishers which are out of order.
"My department has noticed that some fire extinguishers are useless. Business premises owners should either replace or repair them ," said Kamatu.
Kamatu who spoke from his office in Athi River Town on Wednesday said his officers were under instructions to inspect business premises and arrest those who had non-functional extinguishers.
He said culprits were operators of hotels, bars, pubs, restaurants, M-Pesa shops, retail shops and posho mills.
Kamatu said in his assessment, some of the traders had the extinguishers installed in their premises just as a formality given that it is legal requirement. He said some of the gadgets were old and worn out, others had broken or always empty on displays just for the fire officers to see whenever they were in their routine inspections.
He said his team targeted Athi River, Mlolongo, Chyumvi and Kinanie towns where the human population was increasingly high thereby making the areas more vulnerable to fire out breaks.
