Environment County Executive Richard Rop has expressed anger at the dumping of liquor bottles and cartons by a cross section of leaders.
The CeC says that the move was ruining the reputation of the town which was once the cleanest in east and central Africa
Speaking to the press at the KFA Roundabout, Rop claimed that the destruction to the environment was affecting their work.
“We appeal to the MP who is involved to stop trashing our environment. We have lorries to carry out the destroyed liquor bottles. In other areas where the raids are being carried out, they are at a specific site. However, the legislator is just on a spree to make the town dirty hence the spaced out destruction,” said Rop.
On Monday, Nakuru East MP David Gikaria led the destruction of more than one million litres of alcohol at Pinkam and KFA roundabouts
Rop appealed to the security team that was carrying out the operation to inform the ministry where the raids were going to take place.
“This would ensure that we have the lorries which will collect garbage and take them to the dumpsite,” he said.
Health CeC Kabii Mungai said that the broken pieces of liquor exposed residents to dangerous shards.
On Monday, a section of Nakuru leaders defended the move to burn and destroy alcohol in the central business district despite residents raising concern over the dumping of the bottles.
Nakuru East MP David Gikaria defended the move saying that the drinks will “disappear” if they are destroyed away from town.
On Sunday and Monday night, the legislator led residents in the destruction of liquor in the town's main streets. The aftermath was that the town was littered with broken bottles.
“We feel that the alcohol will disappear when its on transit as some of its owners are people in the current government or have strong connections with the leadership. And, the grass will grow and the streets will be cleaned. However, some people might not recover from the effects of alcohol,” he said.
According to Gikaria, the move was also meant to have the county government participate in the ongoing crackdown on illicit alcohol.
