Parents in Kiambu have been asked to be good role models to their children when they are still young so as to mentor them into responsible adults.
Speaking to parents on Wednesday in Kiambu Town during a counselling session, Gladys Chania a family counsellor and also The National Alliance (TNA) coordinator in Kiambu County, has said that poor parenting by many parents in the county has contributed to the current state of alcohol abuse among youths in Kiambu.
"Many of the children who come to me for counselling after they are sent away from school have confided in me that they started drinking alcohol in their parents houses. Why are parents keeping alcohol in the houses as if it is food?" said Chania.
Chania said that the habit of parents using alcohol and other drugs in the presence of their youngsters has destroyed the lives of many promising youths.
"I appeal to you parents to take these drugs out of your houses because you are spelling doom for your children's future," she said.
Chania also appealed to fathers to regularly talk to and advise their sons saying that lack of father figures in many families has led to many boys going astray.
"Boys have lacked role models in the family setting and the result has been low self esteem among the boys which eventually leads to alcohol and drugs," she added.
