Kiambu County anti-drugs campaigner Gladys Chania has urged students to shun drug abuse and concentrate on their studies.

Speaking during an anti-drugs forum at the Alliance Boys High School in Kikuyu on Monday, Chania said that a large percentage of students especially in boarding schools abuse drugs.

The anti-drug crusader stated that drug abuse is a serious problem in schools. She noted that many students are being lured to drug abuse by their peers.

“We are worried by the high numbers of students who abuse drugs in schools and we want the relevant agencies to come up with solutions to these issues,” she said.

Chania cited alcohol and bhang as the most abused drugs in schools in Kiambu County.

She noted that cases of students sneaking from schools at night to drink at nearby bars and pubs have been reported.

The crusader asked the government to come up with ways of curbing drug abuse among students.

“The future of this country is doomed if young people will continue to abuse drugs,” she said.

Chania at the same time called for establishment of rehabilitation centres to help addicts.

She said that least 500 students in Kiambu County are addicted to drugs.

Chania further urged parents and guardians to take their parental roles seriously and help shape the behavior of their children in the right way.
