The county government of Uasin Gishu has issued a ban on car washing along river Sosiani in an effort to conserve the river.
Speaking in his office on Monday, Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno said in the 2015-16 financial year the county government has allocated Sh10 million to conserve the Sosiani nature trail and the Sosiani River.
The rehabilitation process will involve cleaning of the river and planting of trees along the riverbanks.
"This exercise will create employment opportunities for the unemployed youths during the rehabilitation process. We want in future Sosiani River to be a tourist attraction and a recreational facility,” he said.
He said people who have illegally settled along the river should vacate and look for alternative regions or face eviction.
The governor said that dumping of wastes in the river is illegal and anyone apprehended doing so will have to pay a hefty fine.
"I give stern warning to anyone or company that is fond of depositing wastes in the river that their days are numbered and soon they will be arrested and prosecuted so as to be an example to those with similar behavior,” the deputy governor stressed.
