A serious crisis is looming between the county government of Nyamira and that of Bomet in the border township of Chepilat over collection of revenue.
This comes after area residents complained of being subjected to two tax compliant authorities from either side of governments without clear communication.
On Monday, several residents urged the two governments to settle the crisis before it escalates since it was difficult to deal with authorities in each side and the authorities are alleged to have either harassed or threatened clients.
“As traders from this township, we are very concerned on the issue of tax payment compliance. There is little communication from either side of government or the situation might escalate if it is not curbed as early as this,” said Kiptanui Lagat.
According to them, most Revenue collectors have failed to adhere to the boundaries as demarcated by the IEBC hence making it difficult for all traders when remitting their taxes.
“Those obligated to collect the tax are very naïve since most of them have been fighting over control of certain centers within the town and if this goes on, then we will have a real crisis like some other few counties,” added Masara Ondieki.
Chepilat MCA Alfayo Mwongeresa, however, downplayed possibility of a crisis but asked residents to exercise restraint as leadership from both sides tackled emerging crisis.
“I really don’t think it’s a big deal but I would wish to urge residents to handle the matter cautiously as the area leadership investigates and settles the matter as quickly as possible,” he said.
