An administrative assistant chief from Riamoni sub-location in Nyamira County has denied allegations of shielding illicit brewers from apprehension by taking bribes from them.

This comes a day after angry residents descended in his rural home demanding his resignation from the service due to escalating incidents of illicit brewing in the region despite the government crackdown.

However, on Wednesday, Mr Sambu Bosire denied involvement in shielding suspected illicit brewers from being prosecuted and accused his critics of witchhunt.

“I have been spearheading campaigns to have illicit brewers arrested and since the crackdown, a number of them have been apprehended. The allegations are a shock to me and I want to clearly state here that some people wants to bring me down for no good reason,” he said.

The embattled assistant chief linked his woes with a succession battle following the retirement of Rimoni chief Francis Rasugu.

“I understand that people are not happy for my pursuit to be promoted to the chief position. However, they should not politicise my work because I know what I am doing so as my employer,” he said.

According to him, under his leadership, over 1,000 litres of illicit brew had been impounded since the crackdown that was ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta and that the local administration was still keen to crack a whip on those still practicing the vice and threatened to sue those who were behind his woes.
