The county government of Kisumu will close down all Early Childhood Development Centres operating illegally, a county government official has said.

County Executive for Education Jennifer Kere said some ECDs were operating in the county without official recognition by the relevant authorities.

She said the targeted institutions have not adhered to the standard requirements by the county governments. Kere said there are many institutes operating in the county illegally.

She said the county government will continue vetting ECD institutions to ensure quality education is offered.

This is the latest in a string of warnings issued by county government since the major crackdown in 2010 on unregistered institutions.

The ECDs have mushroomed in major towns to cash in on a growing demand for education.

Speaking during the free medical camp on Saturday at Manyatta primary school, Kere said such institutions lack sufficient learning materials and social amenities.

She warned the managers of such institutions against undertaking children issues in their respective institutions before obtaining clearance from the children’s department.

“We are aware of some bogus institutions that have operated in the region for years but are not yet registered with the children’s department,” Kere said.

She warned that they should move with speed and register so that they can operate legally or else they will be closed down.

Kere said the grace period given for the institutions to comply had long elapsed.

She instructed district children officers across the county to close all the institutions that have refused to obey the law.

The executive also asked parents to enroll their children in a well-established institution for quality education.
