Residents of Lanet Umoja Location in Nakuru North Sub-County have been warned of fraudsters in the cash transfer programme for the elderly being implemented by the government in the area.

While addressing the residents during the exercise of listing the elderly and people living with disability who will benefit from the programme in his office on Friday, the area chief Francis Kariuki urged the elderly not to be duped by unscrupulous people demanding money from them so that they may be included in the programme.

“As administrators, we are on alert. We are aware some people will go around collecting money from the elderly. The listing is done free and in a transparent manner. Those caught collecting money from the elderly will be arrested and prosecuted,” the chief said.

The sub-county gender Officer Lillian Kariuki said the exercise will be open and transparent saying prospective beneficiaries would be vetted.

“The public will identify those who deserve. Then there will be a committee that will comprise local residents, administrators and representatives from office of women representative and area MP. This is to ensure only those deserving and meeting the criteria benefit from the cash transfer programme,” she said.

The two said the number of the beneficiaries would be increased depending on the amount of money the government allocates to the programme and appealed to the residents to be patient.

They also urged the beneficiaries to use the money wisely in order to uplift their lives.

Meanwhile, Kariuki thanked residents for their cooperation with security apparatus in fighting crime and other vices in the area.

The chief who is popularly known as the tweeting chief said the mobile technology which area residents have embraced, has made tremendous efforts in thwarting crimes and recovering lost goods.

“People are able to get information and action taken immediately. This has helped fight petty crimes and illicit brew that appear to hamper development in the area,” he said.
