Uika Chief John Mutisya has urged the government to move with speed and help residents in his area with relief food since the rains failed causing crops to dry up.

The chief said that crops have dried up in most parts of his area of administration and in Masinga and Yatta sub-counties due to low rainfall downpour in the region. He added that more than twelve thousand residents are at risk of hunger if quick measures are not taken by the government to save them.

“We are deeply concerned that our people may be affected by hunger soon and we ask the Ministry of Agriculture to move urgently to curb the looming hunger in this region," he urged.

Mutisya was speaking at Kairuni area on Monday during a baraza attended by several area local leaders.

The administrator said that the government should come up with strategies that could help the county governments manage such disasters before they get out of hand.

He added that the rains were not enough for crops for the last two seasons which has left most of the people without anything to feed on.
