Yatta sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Michael Olunga has instructed chiefs and their assistants to ensure lynching of suspects does not happen.

He said cases of mob justice were on the increase in the sub-county.

He spoke a day after residents lynched a suspected thief in Yatta town.

Mr Olunga said suspects should be handed over to the police.

He said it is only the police who the law allows to deal with suspects.

He said chiefs and their assistants were better placed to bar lynching of suspects since they interact with locals often.

Mr Olunga was speaking in Yatta while addressing chiefs and their assistants at a public meeting on Thursday.

He warned dealers of illicit beer that the law will soon catch up with them.

He said authorities will not tolerate drunkenness which he associated to insecurity in Yatta.

Mr Olunga told residents to work closely with the police to curb insecurity in the area.
